This is the fourth time that Brennan has won the Bald Archy Prize.

The winner was announced at the opening of the Sydney exhibition at the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour where the exhibition is now showing until April 22.

We had great fun catching up with exhibition founder Peter Batey when the exhibition opened in Canberra last month and Brennan's portrait captures the irreverent nature of the Bald Archies.

Brennan said Anh Do was an inspiration for him.

"I admire him for what he has accomplished in his life from his very humble beginnings as a child refugee to a successful author, actor, comedian and artist," said Brennan.

"I love his art, he has his own TV show Anh's Brush with Fame and he has been a finalist for the Archibald Prize. He also has that incredible big smile and happy-go-lucky personality that I wanted to capture on canvas.

"While Anh Do is famous for a lot of things, in recent times he's been really making it big on the art scene, so I wanted to paint him doing a painting. I thought a good way to portray that would be in the manner that the famous American artist Norman Rockwell did with his Triple Self-Portrait where I could capture the artist Anh's three selves: the painter, the observer, and the public person."

Batey said while the Bald Archy Prize has sometimes been held in contempt by the "art snobs", the fact that the competition is now in its 25th year highlights just how popular the competition has become.

"We love to push the envelope, have fun and avoid the pretensions that sometimes afflict other more 'serious art competitions," Batey said.

"The satirical side of this event has its basis in the irreverent, larrikin Australian comic comment, and the finalists this year have been fortunate to have had so much inspiration to draw from. It's been a vintage year."

Painted Garden is a collection of works from a strong line-up of artists, each addressing the idea of the theme through different mediums.

Tony Ameneiro, print maker; Robbie Howard, oil on paper; Lynne Flemons, watercolours from a recent residency in Finland; Kirsten Jeffcoat, who studied in Paris for 15 years; Nicola Mildren, a recent graduate from ANU School of Art; Julie Bradley, Patsy Hely, Deb Johansen and Melbourne-based artist, Carolyn Roberts took on the challenge.

On Saturday, April 7, Flemons will give a monoprint workshop in the gardens of Helen Stephens Gallery from 2pm. All materials supplied.

Helen De Jonge, Marion Schumacher and Lesley Whitten are three Goulburn artists who all have a different approach to art, but often focus on birds as a theme.

De Jonge loves Australian birds, Schumacher is a parrot fan and Whitten likes roosters.

As well, the three often produce striking landscapes and seascapes, reflecting their love of the Australian environment.

Three Aspects of Australia is on at the Bungendore Fine Art Gallery, 42b Ellendon Street, Bungendore during April. With a meet the artist session on March 31 from 2-4pm.

In 2018 Jack Riley and Artists will be working on a new full length contemporary dance project to be presented in Melbourne and Canberra. Informed by a surrealist eye, Alone is about the occult, possession and the potential of one person's power over a society.

The work is a development from Riley's recent engagement in QL2's Youth Dance Company Chaos project in Canberra where he had the opportunity to present a section within a multiple bill. The work will be further developed over three weeks in Melbourne between now and March 2018.

Alone will be presented at the Canberra Theatre Centre's Courtyard Studio. The Canberra season will be remounted on a mix of professional and youth dancers from Melbourne, Perth and Canberra's QL2 Youth Company.

The exhibition - which has taken over a large part of the gallery space - provides a small sample of the more than 6500 paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, photographs, glassworks and other objects the gallery has acquired over the past two decades. For many of the works, it's the first time they've been shown in many years, if at all.

CMAG's senior curator of visual arts Deborah Clark, who has curated the exhibition as her final act before leaving the gallery after 10 years, says, "The idea of it is really a showcase of some of the best and brightest" with works both by artists from the Canberra region and art works about the Canberra region.
