"The excitement is the anticipation of what she's going to do as her body moves and capturing that in a still frame," says Sim. "The challenge is that I never know what's going to happen from one quick moment to the next."

Sim has been shooting Canberra's youth dance group, the Quantum Leap Youth Dance Ensemble, since 2009 as well as working in arts marketing and making documentaries for performing artists. She has dedicated Enigma to all artists whose practice and survival is increasingly precarious.

"This is a tribute to the courage these artists exhibit among all the challenges they face," she says.

Canberra Glassworks is seeking your help to provide local artist Peter Nilsson with the opportunity to bring Huldra to life in a giant outdoor glass engraving project for the Winter Glass Market on June 17. Huldra is the ruler of the forest, she who wears the green dress, the lady of the forest, says Nilsson, who was born in Sweden. She has many names and as many appearances. She is an elusive spirit who plays games with lonely men, but also plays an active part in people's lives. She represents nature and reminds us that we must deal with it in the right way, or it will certainly deal with us. Canberra Glassworks has challenged Nilsson to create a large-scale outdoor engraved glass work to demonstrate his exceptional engraving techniques and the unsung hero that is engraving for this year's Winter Glass Market. He will create Huldra in a forest scene by engraving three panels of glass 800mm wide x 1600mm high. The finished work Lady in the Green Dress by Peter Nilsson, valued at $11,000, will be raffled at the Winter Glass Market to raise funds for our Creative Fellowship and other artistic programs. Chinese Whispers and Other Stories is an exhibition that brings together four artists, all female, all with Chinese heritage living in Australia. Through photography and video, the works of Pia Johnson, Tammy Law, Janelle Low and Siying Zhou explore different perspectives into contemporary issues of cultural identity, migration and belonging in Australia today. Each artist's work negotiates notions of cultural identity, racial discrimination and stereotyping, as well as reimagines the spaces we live in within a wider context of mass movement and migration across the globe, and the countless people who live "in-between" places. Johnson has curated the exhibition and she says the impetus was to provide a space where these voices, stories and experiences could be shared. "As a female artist with a mixed cultural background, I feel that it is important and critical to present these perspectives in our globalized world – where identities: local, national and multinational are more connected, more pronounced and more defined by political and cultural questions and tensions." There will be an "In conversation event" on May 21 with Pia Johnson, Siying Zhou and Mikala Tai, director of 4A Centre of Contemporary Asian Art, exploring Chinese-Australian contemporary art and the female perspective. 2pm. The Nancy Sever Gallery presents The Art of the Gija People. Paintings., an exhibition of Indigenous art from the remote East Kimberley region of Western Australia. It features the work of a group of senior Gija artists from the same community as Rover Thomas and Queenie McKenzie, who have been driven to put cross-cultural communication and education into practice through art. What connects these artists is an encyclopaedic knowledge of Gija Country, their skills as cross-cultural communicators and educators, and the desire to share their art within their own community and with audiences beyond. They use painting to depict places that are hard to access, practices that have been discontinued, and knowledge shared so that it may endure. The paintings are at once geographical, historical and biographical. It has been timed to coincide with Defying Empire: 3rd National Indigenous Art Triennial 2017, which opens at the National Gallery of Australia on May 26. The Canberra Grammar School Gallery is calling for submissions for the Outdoor Sculpture Festival to be held from May 16 to June 18 in the heritage-listed school grounds. Celebrating 25 years of supporting young and emerging artists in the region for 25 years, the festival will be part of a month long visual arts event at the school. The main attraction, the "Sculpture on the Campus", will be made up of submissions from professional artists from Canberra and the surrounding regions, with eligible works submitted being judged to win the 2017 CGS Harris Hobbs Outdoor Sculpture Prize of $10,000. The CGS Red Hill campus is already enhanced by a number of permanent outdoor sculpture acquisitions which provide a stimulating and engaging place for the school and wider community to experience. These sculptures are funded from commissions from the sales of work from exhibitions in the CGS Gallery over the past 25 years.
