And with Canberra a pretty place to spend the season, we've explored some of the best spots to enjoy the foliage.

The beautiful trees in the courtyards of Parliament House are usually hidden from the public, except for a few weeks in autumn. The Colours in the Courtyards tours run until May 3 and take visitors to 8 of the iconic building's courtyards, which boast a range of exotic and native Australian trees that. These include Japanese Maples, Gleditsia, Magnolia, Birch Trees, Maple, Linden Trees and Dogwood.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the 250-hectare National Arboretum is also full of vivid colours and textures in autumn.

But Canberrans don't have to visit institutions and botanical gardens for a burst of golden goodness.

Acting director of city presentation at Transport Canberra and City Services, Stephen Alegria, said autumn was his favourite time of year to walk Canberra's streets.

He loved the fluorescent and bright red Chinese pistache, which were common throughout the suburbs but particularly on Friendship Street in Red Hill.

"We actually have quite a few streets in Canberra where the entire street is registered for value of the trees, such as Ebden Street in Ainslie, which has the pin oaks. They have an amazing autumn colour," he said.

"Grant Crescent in Griffith also has an amazing canopy of American elm."

Many autumn-loving Canberrans took to social media to show their favourite leafy spots. The Cotter Reserve, the Australian National University, Acton and Braddon all received a mention. Others cited Weston Park, Yarralumla, the Tuggeranong bike paths and the Parliamentary Triangle as autumn gems.

In the lead up to Canberra Tree Week, the ACT government is using public feedback to make an interactive map of Canberra's best streets for autumnal displays. It can be found at the Transport Canberra and City Services website.
