The game's makers, Hasbro Australia, is going to release a new Australian edition of the game and wants people to vote for their favourite properties.

Forty landmarks across Australia are in the running for the new board game and just 22 will be chosen to appear on the final board game after a public vote.

In Canberra, there are five nominees for inclusion: Lake Burley Griffin, Floriade, Questacon, the Australian War Memorial, and - um - Canberra itself.

Isn't that a bit of a tautology, like saying "expensive Kingston Foreshore apartment"? Never mind, you've got to be in it to win it and if Canberra becomes a Monopoly landmark in its own right, so much the better (sorry Floriade, the wet weather this year probably worked against you).

And are we really surprised at the nominations? Perhaps the game makers could have shaken things up - Mooseheads (this would have to be one of the cheaper properties), the Jolimont Station or Telstra Tower? Kambah Pool?

The capital's pricey real estate trends have been featured in previous editions of Australian Monopoly - the 1990s version of the game had two Canberra addresses as the most expensive (signified by dark blue banners on the board). Flinders Way in Manuka was $350 and Kings Avenue was $400.

In 2007 the Australian Here and Now edition booted Canberra from top property spot in favour of the Barossa Valley and Adelaide. But Anzac Parade, Lake Burley Griffin and the Cotter Reserve made it into the game.

The other Australian locations nominated for the game include Sydney Harbour, Orange, Freycinet, Margaret River, and Hahndorf.

Monopoly Australia wants people to vote for the new properties starting on November 1 at their website.
