The Reid man, 38, was charged with assaulting the woman earlier this month and faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday for allegedly breaching his bail condition to stay away from her.

He has not yet entered a plea.

The court heard he was arrested after police were called to Canberra Hospital following reports the accused had struck his partner in the face, causing her to slam her head against a wall as she fell, on Saturday.

The pair had been visiting the woman's mother at the hospital when they began to argue and the man allegedly lashed out.

A police witness gave evidence the woman, 37, had made numerous reports of assaults allegedly committed against her by the accused, who has not been named to protect the identity of his partner, including four in the past week.

The witness said the alleged victim had reported to Woden police station with black eyes, multiple bruises to her upper arms, scratches and cuts on her legs and red marks around her neck.

She allegedly told police she loved her de-facto partner and was scared of him. When police went to fill in paper work for the alleged assaults, the woman had left the station, the court heard.

The woman had returned after the alleged hospital assault two days later, still with a reddened throat and more injuries, and told officers she was having difficulty swallowing.

She allowed photographs to be taken of her injuries but police eventually noticed she was drunk and not able to take part in a recorded family violence evidence in chief interview.

Police arrested the accused later that night.

The police witness gave evidence the woman had previously told officers on numerous occasions that the accused had forcibly injected her with heroin as a way of controlling her.

Prosecutor Soraya Saikal opposed the man's application for bail on grounds there was a high risk he would reoffend and there was a need to protect the alleged victim.

The accused, represented by Legal Aid, told the court the alleged breach of his bail happened when he was repairing his car at a friend's home in Lyons and the woman had got into the passenger seat and hit him in the face with a wine bottle.

Under cross-examination from the prosecution, the accused said he hadn't pointed out the wine bottle to police when they arrived and had not given a statement about the alleged incident.

Ms Saikal told the court the woman was "an incredibly vulnerable person" and the accused had given "a self-serving version of events" from the witness box.

"He's attempted yet again to use his power over her to diminish her character and paint her in a particular light."

Particularly troubling, she said, was the allegation the man had taken to injecting the woman with illicit substances and, combined with the "litany" of injuries she had shown police, indicated the danger and risk she was at if he was released.

Magistrate Karen Fryar refused bail. The matter will return to court at a later date.
