Kambah pensioner John Peers has been in hospitals from one side of the world to the other since he was paralysed in a freak accident in a London hotel more than a year ago.
Now, despite being a public patient, he is being forced by the Canberra Hospital to pay a daily rate for his care – which will leave him with just $30 a week to live on.

Canberra Raiders outside back Sisa Waqa has put to bed rumours he wants out of the club to join French rugby, adamant he will honour the final season of his two year deal in 2016 and fullback Jack Wighton has given the strongest indication yet he will re-sign with the club.
While Waqa and Wighton are keen to stick around, the Raiders have confirmed at least six players will depart the club at the end of the year.

Traffic on Morshead Drive and Pialligo Avenue will be moved to the outer two lanes in both directions between the Monaro Highway roundabout and Woolshed Creek bridge from 6.30pm tonight until 5am tomorrow.
Wet weather has closed a number of roads around the territory including Point Hut Crossing, Oaks Estate Crossing, Mount Franklin Road at Aggie Gate, Boboyan Road from where the road becomes dirt (except four-wheel drives), Angle Crossing and Sunshine Crossing.
There will also be temporary changes to traffic arrangements near the Arboretum in coming weeks as the ACT government starts to harvest pine trees along the Molonglo River Corridor as part of the Barrer Hill Box-Gum Woodland Restoration Project.
Logs will be hauled from the site between 4am and 8am with temporary traffic arrangements in place to allow trucks to safely exit via River Road and Forest Drive, west of the Tuggeranong Parkway.
There will also be restricted access to several walking trails and cycle paths in the areas around Barrer Hill, south of the Arboretum and a small section of forest south of the Zoo.

In less than a week winter will end, and The Canberra Times annual winter photo competition will draw to a close.
Among this year's candidates is Macarthur resident Chris Blunt, who snapped a frosty morning in bushland in his home suburb.
He said he didn't have to walk far to see how "picturesque suburban bushland can be when there has been a heavy frost".
