Last week's national average price for unleaded petrol fell by 5c a litre to 152.3c, with Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane all recording drops of between 7c and 10c.
Melbourne has the lowest average price at 147.6c, while Darwin remains the most expensive city at 173c.
Canberra prices were down 0.1c on the previous week, making it 8.6c a litre more expensive to refuel in the capital than in Sydney.
CommSec chief economist Craig James said the good news was that wholesale prices were still falling, pointing to further relief ahead for motorists.
"The volatility in petrol prices across capital cities doesn’t appear to be helping anyone, just confusing motorists and making life difficult for retailers," he said.
