If you were hoping it was about time to cool down after the scorchers we've had lately, we've got some bad news.

The mercury is tipped to hit 37 degrees today. The very slim chance of a drop of rain and light winds are also unlikely to bring any relief. The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast another hot top of 36 degrees tomorrow until a significant drop to 29 degrees on Thursday and Friday.

He claims Centrelink public servants who ask too many questions about their agency's controversial "robo-debt" recovery effort are being "managed" out of debt recovery units.The Tasmanian independent also alleges public servants are being played against each other by managers, competing for the highest daily quota of debt notices. The ACT government made a last-ditch effort to give Canberrans an Australia Day concert after the feds cancelled the national event in August. The line-up will boast local rock band Hands Like Houses, alternative five-piece collaborative Young Monks, also from Canberra, and music enterprise Choir of Hard Knocks. Here are the details.

It was a horrible experience for Stephanie Stewart and her 30-month-old daughter Evelyn Harwell. But it could have been much worse.

The Queanbeyan mother was thankful she did not leave her baby in the pram while she starts the car like she usually does, when thieves in a stolen car snatched a nappy bag attached to her pram, grinding it into a concrete pylon as Ms Stewart yelled at them to stop. Finbar O'Mallon has more.

They battle fires and fatigue but now firefighters at Canberra Airport are being forced to sleep on the floor too. Steve Trask has the details of the cramped conditions facing firies, with beds set up in the women's toilets, on the floor next to a noisy printer and in the gym surrounded by weights. There are also reports of shifts stretching into the 18-hour mark, with as little as four and a half hours rest in between. The United Firefighters Union has called the conditions "unacceptable" and said firefighters needed a place at the airport to get some proper shut-eye.
