- Fitness First Initiative free teen classes - These school holidays Fitness First is allowing 14 to 18 year olds free access to the club every day from July 6 to 21. Teens are welcome to join group fitness classes and use the gym equipment any day of the week. FFIT aims to encourage young Australians to get active these holidays for free. Held from 10.30am to 3pm in suburban clubs and 9am to 11am & 2pm to 4pm in the CBD.
- Skate in the City - Enjoy some frosty fun and take the family to Garema Place for some open air ice skating. The rink also includes a ‘snow box’ for the kids to play in. Friday and Saturday evenings enjoy the Stars on Ice performance as well as special day time shows. Open from June 20 to July 27 with general admission costing $17 and kids under 5 for free. - Perception Deception - Does your mind play tricks on you? Test your perception at Questacon’s mind deception exhibition. This family friendly exhibition reveals how our brains process information from our form of perception of the world around us. With more than 60 hands on, fun multimedia exhibits featuring test and illusions its a great way to spend a fun day with the family. Free entry.
- afterDARK Firefly Tours - Brave the wintery nights and spend an evening exploring Canberra’s Botanic Gardens lit up in the twilight. Warm up with a cup of complementary hot chocolate while your family constructs their own hand-made lanterns and then embark on adventure through the Gardens.
Tours run until August 2. Tickets are $22.50 for adults and $16.50 for children (5+). - Discovery Space: Discovery Island - Take the opportunity to get your children to participate in hands on activities exploring the aspects of island life. At Discovery Space children are able to create their own island story headdress and dance in a virtual tropical island scene, as well as various other island activities.

Families take to the ice for Skate in the City at Garema Place.
- Henry’s Winter Wander - If you own a classic Chev or know someone with one, take a cruise around Canberra with the Chev Bowtie Club on July 6. Anyone wanting to participate in the Henry’s Winter Wander will need to meet at Acton Car Park Barrine Drive at 10am for a day of cruising followed by a sausage sizzle. - Kanga Cup International Youth Football Tournament - The Kanga Cup is an annual youth soccer tournament. It is the most prestigious youth soccer tournament of its kind operating in Australia and is the largest in the southern hemisphere. - Christmas in July race day - Enjoy a great afternoon of horse racing at Thoroughbred Park on July 6. General admission is free but if you’re looking for a little extra book a table in the members only Black Opal Room. Member’s tickets cost $15 and table bookings are $25. Art exhibitions:
- Warm Tree art installation - It seems Canberrans aren’t the only people trying to warm up this winter; the trees also seem to be layering up. Warm Trees is an exciting and colourful display at the National Arboretum where volunteers can knit squares, scarves and shapes to install in the forests, gardens and playgrounds. Knitting sessions run until July 15 and the exhibition will be on display from July 25 to August 31. For more information call Jocelyn Plovits on 02 6205 5082.
- A Bird in the Hand! Bob Graham: A Retrospective - Bob Graham’s picture books are loved by generations of families all over Australia. Now families get the opportunity to explore precious sketch books, manuscripts, memorabilia and illustrations from all of their beloved books. The exhibition is on display at Canberra’s Museum and Gallery until August 24.
- AIATSIS: ‘After 200 years’ photographic exhibition - Take the opportunity to celebrate the 50th year of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies by taking a look at a sample of images collected during the After 200 Years photographic project. This project documents the different lifestyles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in remote and urban communities during the late 1980s.
