You could be forgiven for wanting to stay in bed Monday morning, with the wind chill dropping as low as minus 0.2 degrees for those setting the alarm as late as 7.30am.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Sean Carson said the week was off to a wintry start with showers easing after a wet weekend that brought 10 to 20 millimetres of rain to the ACT.

South to south-easterly winds averaged 30 to 40 km/h on Monday and were expected to drop back to 20 to 30 km/h by Tuesday.

Tuesday was forecast to reach a top of 14 degrees.

"It will be another coolish day [Tuesday] - the wind will still be with us but it will be backing off a little bit," Mr Carson said.

Gusts were strong enough to topple a tree on to Southern Cross Drive at O'Reilly Street in Macgregor on Monday morning, while a tree branch damaged a house in Holt.

An Emergency Services Agency spokesman said the ACT SES had received 47 calls for help as of 11pm because of the windy weather.

The damage was mostly minor and widespread across Canberra, with trees and branches fallen across roads, pathways and driveways.

More than 1700 homes were without power in parts of Canberra on Monday after wild winds pushed trees and branches onto power lines, the majority of outages in Canberra's north.

Further west, a small dusting of snow covered the tops of the Brindabellas and the Snowy Mountains.

But the sprinkling might be shortlived.

"There's a few centimetres up there [at] the Brindabellas and down to the Snowy Mountains," Mr Carson said

"It will probably [fall] just this morning. I think by [Tuesday] that would have melted. There could be a bit of snow around next week."

Many Canberrans took to social media on Monday evening to share photos of a spectacular sunset with scattered cloud cover across the territory.

The capital can expect a small reprieve mid-week with winds easing and temperatures rising, with a forecast top of 18 degrees on Wednesday and 20 degrees on Thursday and Friday.

But Canberrans heading to Anzac Day commemorations this weekend should prepare to rug up amid possible chilly temperatures and more wind.

"We might get a repeat of [Monday] for Anzac Day - it looks like cold front will be moving through," Mr Carson said.
