As you approach the city, your car interacts with the parking area and tells you where the parks are and how much parking might cost today.

Founders of ACT start up company Rollercoaster Digital say they want to make that, and much more, happen in Canberra – but first they will head to Las Vegas to find investors.

Co-founders Chris Shackleton and Andrew Snell will be among the first Canberra businesses to attend the Collision business technology conference in the United States in May, which attracts more than 20,000 people from around the world.

Business leaders such as Tesla's Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, have attended Collision conferences, which are held three times a year in Ireland, Hong Kong and the United States.

Mr Snell, who worked with Mr Shackleton for about 10 years before they went into business together, said Canberra was a good place to create a start up company.

"The great thing is people are talking about [start ups] now, they know what we're about which probably wasn't here even when we started a year ago," he said.

Mr Shackleton said their company wanted to explore the "internet of agents", allowing technology to interact independently with a minimum of human involvement.

"One of the our projects was a mobile advertising system where you can replace the screens on the backs of taxis and buses with an actual video screen which can advertise by time of day and geolocation," he said.

"If two buses come past each other it can interact with itself and run a multi-faceted campaign."

Mr Shackleton said, looking towards the future, they would like to explore "smart city" research, trying to roll out technology across a city which seamlessly interacted with its citizens, such as the parking program.

"Canberra's a good size city where you could integrate a lot of really high-end technology quickly and become a world leader," he said.

"It's that seamless idea," said Mr Snell. "There's a quote I love which is, 'Technology is at its best when it disappears'."
