After coming third in the 14km course, he saw his son, 16-year old Yosef Gomechu, win the 5km course.

Yosef, a year 10 student at Melba Copland Secondary School, was competing in the fun run for the first time.

"I stayed in there, I didn't give up and I ran all the way, I tried my best," he said.

And, continuing the double act theme, Claire Ashworth who was the first woman across the line in the 14km course, ran back to compete in the 5km course – and was the first woman across the line.

"The plan was to win both of them and my boyfriend was having a run in the five k so I thought [to compete] to give him a bit of a push along, keep him honest," she said, when asked why she did two runs.

The inspiration appeared to work when the boyfriend, Simon Carter, was the third man to finish in the 5km.

More than 4500 runners and walkers took part in the three courses, raising more than $110,00 for 200 charities, and being rewarded with perfect Spring weather.

At the finish, former ultra-marathon runner and MP Pat Farmer kept the crowd entertained, greeting finishers enthusiastically and asking all dads to "put your arms up" as they ran across the line.

Former Olympian, Canberra's Martin Dent, won the 14km again, in a time of 43 minutes and 35 seconds.

Second was Rowan Walker,with Gemechu Woyecha third.

After Ashworth, who finished the 14km section in 49.10, the second woman to finish was Kelly Varey followed by Jodie Barker.

Dent said he drew away from the others competitors on the uphill section of Adelaide Avenue.

Following his retirement from the international track after the recent Commonwealth Games, he is looking for other opportunities apart from marathons.

"I'll always be a runner," he said.

With the inclusion of the 14km course for the second year, the Canberra Times Fun Run now mirrors its sister event, The Sun-Herald City2Surf, presented by Westpac, the largest fun run in the world.

Bradley Croker from Canberra crossed the 10km finish line first, with a time of 30:52, not far ahead of Joshua Johnson from Yass who placed second with a time of 31:41. Third place went to Joshua Torley from Canberra in 32:27.

Leanne Pompeani from Canberra crossed the line first in the women's 10km field in a time of 36:20, closely followed by Fleur Flannery from Yass and Alexandra Grant, with times of 36:32 and 36:45.

In the adidas 5km Run and Walk, after first place getter Yosef Gomechu came Travis Ey and Simon Carter.

Among the female competitors in this course, following first place getter Claire Ashworth came Sarah Marvin and Jordyne Rauter.

ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher was the official starter for the 14km course and ran the 10km course.

Rick Hatcher from Evans Head, who hasn't missed a race since the event began in 1976, completed his 39th Canberra Times Fun Run.
