For Morgan Kikkawa and Lillian Rowland, however, they spent most of their final school year organising Canberra's first TEDx Youth event.
A spin-off of the popular TED talks - an annual festival of ideas held around the world - TEDx Youth is entirely organised by young people.
Mr Kikkawa and Ms Rowland are part of a team of 11 people running the event, being held at Canberra College on Sunday.
Coming off the back of last year's successful TEDx event in Canberra, Ms Rowland said she hopes this weekend's talks will be able to give listeners a different perspective.
"I think that the same lessons can be learnt but from different people," she said.
"One of the big stigma with the youth event is that it's pursued different because it's targeting young people, but it's just tailored in a different way."
Sunday's event will feature four speakers, including professional athlete turned documentary maker Katie Bender, science communicator Joe Duggan, composer Guyy & The Fox, as well as Hannah Wandel - the chief executive of not-for-profit Country to Canberra - aiming to provide leadership opportunities to rural women.
The theme of TEDx Youth is Finding Our Fire, with organisers wanting the speakers to impart knowledge about a subject they were passionate about.
However, selecting speakers that fitted the bill proved to be the most difficult task when organising the event.
"We weren't looking for people who had done research and prepared a talk, anyone can make a good talk," Mr Kikkawa said.
"What we wanted to see were people who had lived experience and were passionate about what they were talking about."
"They had to have an up-to-their-arm pits mentality," Ms Rowland said.
"Finalising the four speakers was the biggest decision of the whole thing. We didn't realise it would be so difficult."
While TEDx Youth events have been held in other Australian cities such as Sydney and Melbourne, this is the first time it has been held in the ACT.
Preparations have been underway since mid-2016 to organise the talks, and Mr Kikkawa said it was often difficult juggling logistics with studying for final exams.
With most of the preparation for the event complete, all that's left for the team of young organisers is to watch it all unfold.
