But eating Weet-Bix has been taken to a new level by a few Canberrans.

What started as a joke between a group of tradies, about who could eat 20 Weet-Bix the fastest, has become a fundraiser and a serious competition for the Weet-Bix Challenge crown.

Competitors will attempt to consume Weet-Bix at a heroic pace to step up for a shot at reigning champion Eddie Broers' title on Saturday at Scrivener Dam, all for a good cause.

Sarah Broers said her husband was the driving force behind the challenge.

"This year he decided to get a few more people on board," she said.

"He made a few phone calls and people started to get excited about it.

"This is the first year that it is happening as an official event.

"It's the first year that we've got a social media page and a charity and sponsors behind it.

"It was sort of an inside joke between the tradies that everyone wants to hold the WBC title."

The challenge, which is open to all ages, already has 50 participants signed up.

The event continues to snowball with a sausage sizzle, a coffee cart and spectators all part of the spectacle.

"They are all going to do it early in the morning before work so there is no excuse for people not to turn up," Mrs Boers said.

The idea to turn the challenge into a fund-raising event has taken off and the Broers will be donating all money raised to the SIDS and Kids charity.

"We've got a five year old, a three year old and a one year old," Mr Broers said.

"When you have kids, things like that hit home.

"I don't know how they would get through it so it is nice to be able to make a difference if you can."

The WBC title challenge gets under way from 6.30am for a 7am start.
