The big freeze is expected to bring big crowds to the mountain ski resorts this weekend, with blue skies and fresh snow on the way.

With over 120 centimetres on the ground at both Perisher and Thredbo, Weatherzone meteorologist Rob Sharpe predicted it would be perfect conditions for carving up ski fields across the Snowy Mountains on Saturday and Sunday.

"It's going to be a great weekend to head to the slopes as we've got beautiful blue sky days with plenty of fresh snow on the ground as well so it will be wonderful to be hitting the slopes and enjoying the sun," Mr Sharpe said.

"During the nights we're going to see clear skies and light winds that will allow the temperatures to plummet well below freezing so snowmakers will be able to do their job with ease with lots of fresh man-made snow each night."

But snowchasers are warned to get in early. Snow play at Corin Forest is already booked out for the weekend, for the first time this year, but there are still spots available to try skiing or snowboarding.

Andrew Snell, a spokesman for Corin Forest, said while school holidays are usually a busy time, it will be "the first totally packed" weekend they've had this year.

"Whenever it snows in the Brindabellas, especially whenever we get a really good dumping at Corin, it's absolutely crazy. The other morning we had in the order of a kilometre of cars waiting for the roads to be opened by Roads ACT," he said.

Corin Forest received about 15 centimetres of snow overnight on Wednesday although the road was only accessible to 4WDs until about 11.30am.

Mr Snell encouraged people to come out to try skiing or snowboarding at Corin, and said there are plenty of slots available mid-week too, including for snow play.

"We are open seven days for all of winter. We know school holidays are wrapping up but midweek will be a really good time to get plenty of space on the snow if you can make it up," he said.

Blizzard conditions swallowed much of the Snowy Mountains earlier this week as a massive cold front blew through the region.

On Wednesday, the Bureau of Meteorology reported Thredbo Top Station had the coldest maximum temperature in Australia for the past seven years, the mercury only reaching minus 5.8 degrees.

Canberrans awoke to falling snow on Wednesday morning, with snow down to 600 metres and Mount Ainslie and Black Mountain blanketed by falls.
