Census data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that on census night, 32.7 per cent of the ACT population worked in public administration and safety, up from 30.1 per cent in 2006.
Almost 70 per cent of people travelled to work by car, and the proportion using the bus get to work was down from 5.8 per cent to 5.6 per cent.
But the survey showed an increase in the number of people walking or riding a bicycle work.
Nearly two thirds of the ACT workforce were employed full-time.
Almost 30 per cent of Canberrans were in professional occupations, compared to 21 per cent of Australians overall.
The number of ACT residents who had completed post-graduate degrees jumped from about 17,000 in 2006 to 26,000 in 2011.
Society and culture and management and commerce were the most common areas studied. The survey inidcated the proportion of students taking engineering and related technology courses was continuing to decline.
