The out-of-the-blue performance was at the very un-rock-star time of 8am.
And we have to say most of the 400-strong flash mob looked at least around the same vintage as Kilbey and all thoroughly enjoying their unique encounter with Aussie rock royalty.
The Sydney Flash Mob Choir - as the name suggests - is a spontaneous choir.
People register their mobile numbers and get a call to assemble at any moment at the City Recital Hall in the heart of Sydney to sing.
Members just turn up ready to sing with no idea what the song will be. They are given a songsheet when they turn up and are guided by choirmaster Richard Gill.
Thursday's performance was only the fourth time the choir had performed, City Recital Hall acting CEO Anthony Yeo told us.The audience did get a heads-up Kilbey would be joining them but had no idea what he would be singing.
"Sydney Flash Mob Choir is one of the ways we're re-imagining City Recital Hall," he said.
"We wanted to create an event that activates our venue in a different way, so Sydney Flash Mob Choir turns the idea of an audience watching a performance completely on its head.
"We also wanted to create an event that anyone and everyone can come along to, which is why it's free and there's no commitment or RSVPs – if you can make it, you just show up.
"It doesn't even matter if you can't sing. But most of all, we wanted to create an event that's fun and we know we've definitely achieved that when we look around and see the smiles on everyone's faces."
The event with Kilbey was a special one.
"When we heard that conductor George Ellis was good friends with Steve Kilbey from The Church we all agreed it would be great to have him along as a special guest," Yeo said.
"On stage at Sydney Flash Mob Choir, the friends led the crowd of over 400 singers through The Church's classic Australian hit Under the Milky Way' and in three part harmonies!"
While The Church formed in Sydney, it did have its genesis in the band Baby Grande, which Kilbey started earlier in Canberra. The Church performed at Canberra's centenary concert in 2013.
