By day Eliot Duffy toils away as a public servant, but outside work hours he is literally bouncing off the walls, ramps and steps of Canberra's urban landscape.

Mr Duffy is one of about 1000 people who dedicates many of his weekends and afternoons to parkour in the ACT as president of the Canberra Parkour Association.
When the group heard the Allara Street building in front of their favourite haunt Toast, a courtyard named after the former nightclub at the site, was up for sale and possible redevelopment they began an online petition calling for it to be retained for parkour practitioners.
The Economic Development Directorate has confirmed the ACT government-owned courtyard was safe for now with no current proposals to restrict public access, but Mr Duffy wants long-term certainty and the group has written to Chief Minister Andrew Barr to highlight the benefits of parkour.
"[The parkour community] has such great potential to address issues such as social inclusivity, physical and mental health, discrimination and youth engagement," he said.
"A lot of the students we get ... are physical people … but they've been alienated by the competitiveness of traditional sports.
"The offerings for the community are pretty obvious, all these people come out with very little confidence in their physical abilities … and they're leaving healthier and fitter."
Parkour teaches people to see their environments in a different light and repurpose otherwise dull and unused spaces, Mr Duffy said.
It's an approach he believes aligns well with ACT government initiatives to tackle obesity and its urban renewal programs.
Although purpose-built training grounds would be "excellent", Mr Duffy said the real aim was to encourage the government to think more broadly about how they structure public spaces for informal physical activity beyond "restrictive" exercise equipment installed recently at several sites across the territory.
"You can do your chin-ups, you can do your push-ups, but we want people to understand that adults can go out and play and be active," he said.
"They don't have to go out and do a set calisthenics routine. They can go out and enjoy their movement without exercise being a chore."
Parkour is akin to an obstacle course and can include vaulting, jumping, climbing, and running, but the altruistic philosophy attached makes it different from other sports, Mr Duffy said.
"I'm training to get fitter and healthier so if you're in trouble I can lend a hand to help … we're also training for longevity," he said.
"I want to be able to do this when I'm 55."
The group has about 30 members who train regularly but classes can bring out about 100 people, Mr Duffy said.
While the majority are in their late teens and early 20s, Mr Duffy said there were some as young as six and others in their 50s.
Canberra has twice hosted a national gathering of parkour practitioners at Toast, the most recent two years ago brought 150 people from interstate, Mr Duffy said, and he believes there is room for the sport to grow.
As well as Toast the courtyard at the Family Court, the ANU, and Belconnen library are favourite Canberra locations for parkour.
Although the relationship with all site owners was positive, Mr Duffy admits they are occasionally asked to move and always happy to comply.
"We teach all our students that we are the second users of all these spaces," he said.
