"I auditioned for a different TV show called Wipeout which was an obstacle-style reality game show. I didn't get in but then the same casting company asked that I audition for Beauty and the Geek," he said.

After being named the winning Geek alongside his partner Beauty Emma Cam, the 30 year old's thirst for high-stakes obstacle fun escalated.

In November he is due to fly to Las Vegas to compete in 2015 World'sToughest Mudder.

"Tough Mudder is held in many different countries, some events here in Australia," he said. "But the Worlds is a sort of world championships held each year."

Taking part in the 10km event at the The Canberra Times Fun Run will be his last training event before the extreme 24-hour obstacle challenge in Nevada.

"I think I was 12 years old the first time I ran the 10km at the fun run," the public servant from Watson said.

"Although I could do the 14km without any issues, I don't want to break with the tradition of doing the 10km."

He finds his training schedule running six times a week a bit of a bore but said it's all worth it when you're in a sea of people at the event.

"There is a slight uphill section I love getting to each year where you can turn around and see the thousands of people behind you," he said. "I do it for the race atmosphere."

When he first took on World's Toughest Mudder two years ago in New Jersey he clocked up 88km but Reading said he hoped to push himself further this time around.

He has set a distance goal of 100km but said he would have to act strategically in order to push through.

"Last time I ran 88km but at 17 and half hours I basically couldn't walk any more," he said.

"There are a lot of tactics to think about during the race but it's about being stubborn and having the will power to keep going because your body can do a lot more than you think it can."

True to form Reading felt unleashing his geeky side would see him finish on top again.

"I went out this week and bought all my supplements, lollies, power gels for the race - what is that two months ahead of time?" he said. "I had my checklist out to make sure I'm prepared which is a bit geeky yeah."
