Roads ACT figures, released under Freedom of Information laws, have revealed the 20 most dangerous roads in the territory, largely due to the frequency and severity of crashes.

The ranking also took into account a range of other factors which influenced road safety, including traffic volume, speeds, and whether there were shops or schools nearby.

The data was collected under the ACT government's traffic warrant system during a five-year period and the most recent ranking was put together in 2013.

Six of the top 10 roads were in northside suburbs.

Heading the list was the section of Antill Street in Dickson which runs from Phillip Avenue to Northbourne Avenue, and takes in the suburb's busy shopping precinct.

It had 150 smashes that resulted in damage to property, the most of any road in the ACT, the data showed.

There were also eight crashes on that stretch where someone was injured.

The northside street has consistently been the highest ranked road since 2006.

Kent Street in Deakin, and the stretch of Sternberg Crescent, between Erindale Drive and Wheeler Crescent, in Wanniassa, rounded out the top three.

Sternberg Crescent had the highest number of deadly incidents, with two fatal road crashes recorded for the period.

In the inner north, Cowper Street in Dickson, Majura Avenue in Ainslie and Hackett's Phillip Avenue also made the top 10.

Further south were Hopetoun Circuit in Deakin and Namatjira Drive in Waramanga.

With 12 incidents, Anthony Rolfe Avenue in Gungahlin had the highest number of crashes which led to injuries.

The roads with the highest volume of smashes which damaged property were Antill Street, Anthony Rolfe Avenue, with 144 incidents, and Maribyrnong Avenue in Kaleen, which had 108.

Territory and Municipal Services directorate traffic management and safety senior manager Rifaat Shoukrallah said the data was used to prioritise roads the ACT government should consider for installing traffic calming measures.

The ACT was one of the first jurisdictions to introduce the scoring system, which was designed to monitor the impact of increasing numbers of motorists who sped and used suburban roads as a short-cut to avoid major arterial roads.

"Obviously when you get those two, you get increased potential for crashes and you also get increased severity," he said.

Mr Shoukrallah said data for the system was collected on a continuing basis to help improve traffic conditions and the rank was updated every few years.

The ACT's ranking system started out with 50 entries but has since grown to include about 440 roads.
