Between 50 and 60 animal-lovers blessed their fluffy, feathery, scaly and slimey animals at Kippax Uniting Church on Sunday for a morning of "semi-organised chaos."

Two-month-old Bambi the bunny was among the four-legged church-goers, brought in by the Harper family to celebrate the companionship and care between humans and creatures.

The annual 40-minute service included music, games and each owner simultaneously blessing their animals with words off a slideshow.

Bambi's owner Andrew Harper, who attended the blessing with his wife and two children, said it was about acknowledging carers of animals as well as recognising God's work.

"It's also about all the volunteers, the World Wildlife Foundation, the RSPCA, the Guide Dog Society - which you don't really think of - and scientists as well," he said.

Executive Minister at Kippax Uniting Church, Gordon Ramsay, whose been running the service for 14 years, said the 25 animals ranged from dogs, cats and chickens, to rabbits, fish, lizards and snails.

"We did have a baby pig once which I thought was pretty special. We've had snakes, stick insects, and worms," he said. People have even dressed up as Dorothy the Dinosaur or worn a Lion onesie to join the celebration.

Fun and games aside, Mr Ramsay stressed the significance of animal companionship for socially isolated people and its mental health benefits.

"Even in our work in Uniting Care Kippax we regularly find the importance of animals in peoples' lives when they are struggling in other areas. I think that the bond between humans and animals is something we should never ever underestimate."

He believes this is particularly true of Canberra's bush-setting, not only surrounded by wildlife but where animals share the streets.

Mr Harper said the bond his children share with his rabbit, dog and fish teaches them about responsibility and affection while encouraging outside activities.
