Police were called to the Meche nightclub in the Sydney building on Northbourne Avenue about 3.40am, following reports of an unconscious man within the venue.
Ambulance officers later transported the 27-year-old to the Canberra Hospital for medical treatment, where he remains in a critical condition. As of 1pm on Tuesday, he was yet to regain consciousness, an ACT Policing spokesman said.
Meche was reportedly busy when the man was discovered on the dance floor. The club, whose owners describe it as being at the “forefront of the urban clubbing scene”, had opened its doors at 10pm.
Police are investigating the incident, but could not comment on the cause of the man’s unconsciousness or any injuries he may have suffered.
ACT Policing cannot confirm nor rule out the possibility of assault, an offence which has been reported more than 40 times in Civic licenced premises in the first half of the year.
Between January 1 and June 30, ACT Policing recorded 41 assaults and assaults causing actual bodily harm within licensed premises in the city zone. Eighteen of the offences were assaults causing actual bodily harm.
