Three months after he was shot, Lihai Vimahi and Daniel Grech's victim raped and assaulted his partner in a vigorous attack that thwarted allegations he suffered serious injury in the shooting.

Vimahi, 24, and Grech, 27, now face a maximum of 5 years in prison for the shooting, not the 20 years they had been exposed to after being charged with intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The pair, both in black suits and with their short dark hair shaved to the scalp at the back and sides, grinned at each other and their supporters in the packed court as the verdict came down.

The victim's partner had relayed the vicious assault in graphic detail.

She told the bikies' trial the man had beaten, kicked and raped her in a terrifying four-hour episode. The man - recently shot in the shoulder - had no difficulty lifting her up and throwing her around.

He did not - said Grech's defence barrister John Purnell SC, who was instructed by Boxall Legal's Sarah Boxall, and Vimahi's barrister Peter Bevan - suffer from grievous bodily harm.

Acting Justice Stephen Walmsley agreed. He instead found the pair guilty of the much lesser offence of intentional wounding, which carries a maximum penalty of five years.

It didn't help the prosecution case when the shooting victim later refused to break the bikies' strict code of silence and give evidence, even when warned he could be charged with contempt of court.

On the last day of the trial the victim appeared briefly in court via audiovisual link from the Alexander Maconochie Centre, where he promptly refused to take an oath or affirmation.

Vimahi and Grech had faced an ACT Supreme Court trial over two shootings, both on the night of March 12, 2015, which prosecutors said were targeted at properties occupied by rival Rebels.

It had been alleged that at about 9.45pm that night they had driven past and shot at the window of an empty house in Kambah. The house was connected with a fully patched member of the Rebels.

Prosecutors pointed to a motive. Grech was not a fan of the Rebel who lived in the Kambah house, and he had vowed to others on a prison phone call he would tattoo 'dog' on the Rebel's head.

But the judge found them not guilty of that shooting.

Justice Walmsley, noting the unexplained absence at trial of the Rebel whose house it was, said he could not find the pair guilty of the offence they had been charged with, which required a gun be fired and cause a person reasonable apprehension for their safety.

He also said there was no evidence to pin them to the scene.

The second shooting, for which the bikies were found guilty, was at Stirling about 15 minutes later. In this crime, bullets from two guns had lodged in a man connected with the Rebels, who was sitting on his porch having a cigarette.

Prosecutors again had a motive. The court heard the Rebels had shot up Vimahi's Comonchero uncle's house, and this was payback.

The Crown case was largely circumstantial, and linked the bikies to the weapons and the scene with DNA and ballistics evidence.

When the victim went to hospital that night, doctors found shotgun pellets in his foot and a .45 calibre pistol round in his shoulder.

Grech's DNA was all over a .45 calibre pistol that ballistics evidence had linked to the shooting. He had confessed to buying the gun in a recorded prison phone call. While Vimahi was linked to a shotgun later found at his girlfriend's house. In intercepted calls, Vimahi knew intimate details of the shooting not released to the public.

The judge found Grech guilty of possessing a prohibited weapon - the .45 calibre pistol. Police had recovered the gun from Adelaide, near where Grech had been arrested shortly after the shooting.

The judge said he rejected the evidence of Vimahi's brother, who had taken the stand and given alibi evidence, telling the trial his brother was with him at home the night of the shootings.

The case will return to court on June 7 for a sentence hearing.
