The young man, who was a juvenile at the time, and his co-offender Taylor Lewis Schmidt, 22, last week pleaded guilty in the ACT Supreme Court to the killing in Braddon in 2011.
The court was scheduled to hear a disputed facts hearing - when the prosecution and defence cannot agree on the details of the offence - on Wednesday.
But the pair instead agreed on the facts of the offence and an amended statement was tendered by prosecutors.
Mr Zhao, of Gungahlin, decided to walk home when he could not find a taxi after arriving in Canberra at 4am on a bus from Melbourne.
His bloodied body was found next to a tree by passers-by about 6.40am on August 4, 2011.
Court documents said Schmidt and the juvenile had drunk alcohol and smoked marijuana in Dickson before deciding to "do an earner" to get some money.
The pair armed themselves with a machete and baseball bat and walked along Northbourne Avenue towards the city.
Schmidt used the baseball bat to smash a bus shelter and the windscreen of a parked car along the way.
The offenders went to a friend's Turner unit where they drank wine.
They then put on gloves and said they were going out to get some money before leaving with the weapons.
Schmidt and the juvenile then confronted Mr Zhao, knocked him to the ground and dragged him several metres from the footpath where they stole his mobile phone and $21 cash.
Schmidt hit the deceased with the baseball and his co-offender threatened Mr Zhao to "be quiet" while swinging the machete in a threatening manner.
The court documents do not provide any detail of the fatal attack, other than the juvenile does not recall anything until he heard Schmidt yell "run".
They returned to the friend's flat who noticed they had blood on their faces.
They changed clothes, hid the weapons and returned to the Dickson property.
Schmidt and his co-offender remain in custody.
The juvenile will reappear for sentence later this month.
Schmidt is due back before the court in October.
