The ACT government released a slick new video via its Facebook page on Tuesday explaining that the new area, adjacent to the Canberra Centre, had a speed limit of 20km/h, and pedestrians had right of way.

Canberrans have responded to the video, which has now clocked 12,000 views, with many comments echoing some of the confusion felt in the city.

"Pity there isn't enough signage to explain this malarky to drivers, who presumably aren't looking at your Facebook page when driving around Civic," Facebook user Patrick Wall commented.

Out on Bunda street, Noel Kitt, who was making a delivery in the area, said while he was a fan of the change, an incident where he came close to colliding with a pedestrian made him wish for more signage.

"It's dangerous. There is not enough distinction between normal carriageway and this shared zone," he said.

Olivia McNamara, who works at one of the shops affected by the construction of the shareway, said she cannot see how it has changed the street.

"I don't think it has really improved the area any more than before," she said.

A spokesman for Territory and Municipal Services Minister Shane Rattenbury shook off the criticism.

"The fact 40 people out of the 12,000 who have seen it have made various comments, both supportive and critical of the project, is just one means of evaluating the project," he said.

"TAMS has only received one letter critical of the project."

The spokesman said the video cost $1200 and two days to produce and staff monitoring the road had been "impressed with how quickly the community has adapted to the change".

Others out on the street said the confusion was just a teething problem.

"It's a little bit confusing but it's new and will bring more people and life into the city centre which is nice," new Canberra resident Kelly O'Brien said.

Cyclist Ivan Cotzur also voiced his support, saying it "was nice to have right of way for a change".
