Sustainable Development Minister Simon Corbell will announce on Monday the successful tender for design, construction, operation and maintenance work, awarded to a consortium led by international design and engineering firm Arup.
Emphasising their experience in planning and delivery of light rail projects in Sydney, Perth, the Gold Coast and overseas capitals, Mr Corbell said firms Hassell and Parsons Brinckerhoff were included in the tender.
Brown Consulting, LANDdata Surveys, Philip Chun Access, SLR Consulting, GML Heritage and dsb Landscape Architects also make up the consortium.
Arup did the structural design of the Sydney Opera House, Paris' Centre Pompidou and Beijing 2008 Olympic sites.
In 1991, the company planned the route for the Channel Tunnel rail link between London and Paris and is the lead consultant for the $1 billion Gold Coast light rail system due for completion this year.
Arup and Parsons Brinckerhoff have offices in Canberra.
Hassell and Arup are involved in planning for a proposed tram line from Sydney's Circular Quay to the city's eastern suburbs, planned for operation by February 2019.
Mr Corbell said four credible submissions had been received. He said the consortium had demonstrated a detailed understanding of Canberra and would engage local expertise to support its work.
''The strong interest in the tender underlines the national significance of this project and it also aligns with our desire to use the best skills and expertise to deliver a transformative light rail system in Canberra,'' Mr Corbell said.
The first stage of the Capital Metro project is planned to run from Civic up Northbourne Avenue and then along Flemington Road to Gungahlin.
Construction is expected to begin in 2016.
