The controlled burn will take place on the Cooleman Ridge Nature Reserve and cover 15 hectares in total.
Parks and Conservation fire management officer Brian Levine said the weather conditions on Wednesday made the conditions favourable for a burn.
"Temporary smoke cover may occur and smoke may linger for a few days," he said. "Every effort is made to conduct burns in weather conditions that will minimise the impact of smoke in the area."
Controlled burns are regularly conducted by firefighters to safely remove fuel which could have allowed a bushfire to spread and grow.
The ACT Health Directorate has advised people with asthma, other chronic respiratory or cardiac diseases to avoid exercising in the area and stay inside if affected by smoke
