Education Minister Joy Burch joined territory officials as they toured the Coombs Primary School construction site on Monday.

The school, which will open in time for term one next year, will have up to 720 students on the roll.

Ms Burch said the student body for the $47 million school would be predominantly from families living in Coombs and the nearby community of Wright.

Work is under way on the school, including the classrooms, administration facilities, a hall, school oval, meeting rooms and a fenced playground.

About 40 staff will be employed when the school opens next year.

"This is a growing community," Ms Burch said. "This will be the first bit of public community infrastructure for our community to use, whether they are with the school or just kicking the footy around on the oval.

"Everything the students will need will be in place here and reflects the investment we do make for public education."

Up to 55,000 families are expected to move into the Molonglo area in the next 30 years as Canberra's population passes 500,000 by 2050.

The new school has been designed as a dynamic site for education and community activities.

Among its features are designated learning spaces for preschool to year 6 students, facilities for music, cooking, curriculum enrichment classes and shared teaching capability, a library and school resource centre, a canteen and outdoor learning and play areas.

Workers showed Ms Burch inside classrooms and administration areas designed to provide state-of-the-art learning technology, incorporating noise reduction features.

The project will also incorporate environmentally friendly features, including the largest solar panel on an ACT public school building.

"All our public schools cater for all students with all needs, across ages and across our suburbs. So this school will be an inclusive community, and will welcome everyone from this suburb and I am sure parents will be looking outside the suburb of this fabulous school as it comes online."

The project received $29.84 million in last year's ACT budget, in addition to $7 million committed for design and tender documentation in March 2014.
