The All That I Am author took out the Arts and Culture prize at the 2013 InStyle magazine Women of Style Award that were held in Sydney on Tuesday.
The former human right’s lawyer and legal adviser for the Attorney-General’s department took out the top honour over fellow nominees Opera Queensland artistic director Lindy Hume and playwright Kate Mulvany.
The 46-year-old mother of three left her legal career in Canberra in the mid-‘90s as a 28-year-old to pursue her dream of becoming a writer.
Funder is now based in New York where she works with international organisations which aid writers working in oppressive countries.
“I’m grateful for the recognition that I’ve had, responsibility comes with that. That’s why I’m working with the International Cities of Refuge Network, which rescues writers based in dangerous regimes. For me, it focuses on my interests in writing and on freedom of speech and democracy,” Ms Funder told InStyle.
“Anna is an incredibly powerful and well-respected Australian author. Her drive, passion and commitment is a testament to her success,” InStyle editor Kirsten Galliott told the 300 strong crowd.
Other winners on the night included Nicole Kidman, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame – her mother Janelle Kidman accepted the award on her behalf – AFL commissioner Sam Mostyn and fashion designer Carla Zampatti.
