The heartbreak of saying goodbye to a baby who has died before, during or soon after childbirth comes with the added weight of limited time.

A Canberra mother is helping

Richardson mother Carmen McGlinn has fundraised to provide the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children with its first Cuddle Cot in memory of her son, Logan, who died at five weeks of age.

Logan was born with an undiagnosed muscle disorder and spent his short life on life support.

"My partner and I lost Logan eight years ago and this type of thing wasn't around back then so, we only had limited time with him after he passed away," Ms McGlinn said.

"The cot is just something that can make a really difficult time that little bit easier. You don't have to rush the parents to say their goodbyes; they have more time with their baby."

Cuddle Cots cool a deceased baby's core body temperature, delaying the natural bodily processes and giving families more time with their children, especially if the death is unexpected.

"Something like a stillbirth, you dont expect to have to make that phone call to family to say you've only got an hour to get here," Ms McGlinn said.

"Being the nation's capital, I thought our hospital should have been one of the first to have one of these. I thought we'd do a fundraiser in memory of my son so other parents who have to go through something similar to what we did can get a bit longer with their babies to say goodbye."

Ms McGlinn launched the Cuddle Cot fundraiser online about a month ago with the support of her fellow University of Canberra midwifery students and the Canberra Hospital Foundation.

The foundation pitched in the last $1000 for the $3000 cot, which has been ordered and is expected to be in the hospital's birthing suite in about four weeks.

"I've noticed the majority of the people donating are donating in memory of a child they've lost or a child a family member or friend has lost," Ms McGlinn said.

"We've had a couple donations that have had the message they're donating for the midwifes who see this kind of thing far too often."

Clinical midwifery consultant Emmalee Hamilton said the Centenary Hospital's maternity unit was grateful for Ms McGill's fundraising efforts and the Canberra Hospital Foundation's donation.

"The purchase of the Cuddle Cot will benefit families that have lost their baby. The Cuddle Cot enables families closer contact with their baby during this difficult time," she said.

Ms McGlinn, a first-year midwifery student, said she hoped to one day be there for other parents facing a difficult or high-risk birth.

"I lost my son eight years ago and since then I've had three healthy kids but had a lot of things go wrong when my kids were born - they all went through neonatal intensive care," she said.

"I'd love to be there for other women going through something similar."
