Councillors will vote on Thursday whether they will support the establishment of a cycling pathway from Bungendore to Captains Flat as one of the nation's newest rail trails.

The trails, which are popular in Victoria, have turned some of the nation's disused railway lines into cycling tourist attractions.

Trails can be established by removing the tracks and replacing them with road base or gravel, or potentially pouring concrete to create a smooth pathway.

A recent online petition regarding the Bungendore to Captains Flat line attracted 200 signatures, calling upon Palerang Council and Monaro MP John Barilaro to support the initiative.

The petition said endorsement was needed from the council and MP in order for the NSW Government to open the line up to the alternate use.

Labor's Steve Whan said earlier this year establishing the line as a rail trail could open a new tourism industry, as seen in Victoria.

Small cafes, bed and breakfast accommodation and rest stops have sprung up along the sides of trails interstate.

Mr Whan said under the Victorian model, the government retained ownership of the rail easement.

"You have to ensure as you travel through people's farms that you are not disrupting their activity as well," he said.

"That, in the past, has been a bit of a barrier to doing some of these [in NSW]."
