The girl was travelling with her father on Southern Cross Drive in Florey when the car collided with a Nissan Navara at the intersection of Chewings Street around 7pm.

The father was not harmed but was taken to Calvary Hospital and is devastated by the loss of his daughter, whose identity has not been released.

Flowers were laid at the scene of the accident on Thursday morning with thousands of Canberrans expressing their condolences for the family in comments online.

In a statement, the ACT Education and Training Directorate offered its deepest condolences to those involved in the incident.

"Our thoughts are with the student's family and friends, and the police and emergency services officers involved during this difficult time," a spokesman said.

"In tragic events such as these, all available resources are put in place to support school communities. Counselling services are in place to support staff, students and families."

The spokesman said counselling had also been organised for the girl's family.

Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Station Sergeant Susan Ball said the crash had taken a toll on the officers and paramedics who attended the incident.

"This is just tragic news not only for the family but also for the police and ambulance officers who attended and the community as this is a child," she said.

The death was the eighth on ACT roads this year and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
