In its submission to the ACT Government Budget 2012-13, cycling organisation Pedal Power labelled the completion of the Kingston Foreshore path as a ''missing link'' preventing huge tourism and recreational benefits for the capital.

''The Kingston Foreshore path is necessary to complete the path around Lake Burley Griffin, which should be the best half-day cycle ride in Australia,'' it stated.

The submission acknowledged the government's annual $2 million commitment to cycling infrastructure, but called for a focus on the lakeside path to curb what it stated was continued inaction by the Land Development Authority.

''A clear budget commitment by the government will ensure the path is completed and the government receives its due credit,'' it stated.

''On the other hand, continued inaction will become more noticeable, especially considering the contrast with the million-dollar-plus investments the government has recently made in the Lake Burley Griffin cycle path.''

Pedal Power vice-president Jeff Ibbotson said the path was important for both commuters and recreational cyclists.

''When it's complete, it will be a destination in itself,'' he said.

''It will enable riders to get from the Parliamentary Triangle through to the wetlands and back around to the northern side.''

Mr Ibbotson said the local tourism market would also benefit from its completion.

''Canberra is getting a reputation for good cycle paths and this will polish that off,'' he said.
