The 32-year-old man was denied bail in the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday, but his lawyer said there were concerns about the strength of the charges against him as the woman had failed to provide a statement to police since the alleged incidents on November 23.

The woman, who had previously been in a relationship with the man for more than a decade, called police at 2.10pm that day and reported the alleged entry and threat. She said the defendant arrived on a black motorbike and she heard a loud bang and saw the man walk through the front door.

Court documents said the woman claimed the man picked up a hammer and threatened to smash her head until the couple's son told him to stop. The defendant then left on the motorbike.

His bail conditions at the time included not assaulting or contacting the woman or approaching within 100 metres of her or her property.

Police arrived about 30 minutes after the call and observed the timber front door of the home bent out of shape and damage to the timber around the locking barrel.

The woman repeated her claims to police in person but did not attend an arranged appointment with police the same day to provide a formal signed statement, and did not answer a phone call, the documents said. The duty defence lawyer said the son had also not provided a signed statement.

Police arrested the defendant on Friday morning and he appeared in court on Saturday on assault, property damage and burglary charges.

The prosecutor opposed bail on the grounds the defendant would commit further offences if released, and there was a risk he would pose a threat to her former partner.

The duty defence lawyer said the defendant had close ties to the territory and lived with a new de facto partner.

No pleas were entered.

Magistrate Beth Campbell said the claims suggested the defendant had breached bail and she had no confidence he was a man who would keep his word if released.

The matter returns to court on Tuesday, December 15.
