That’s the message from ACT Policing, as Canberra heads towards Christmas.

Since the start of December police have caught 42 drink drivers on territory roads, also apprehending three drivers who tested positive for illicit drug use.

And last weekend alone, 20 drink drivers were caught out – eight of which were P-platers or special licence holders – for whom the legal blood alcohol limit is zero.

In one particular incident on Saturday night, a 20-year-old P-plater crashed his Holden ute into a home in Harrison, breaking through a brick wall and causing about $60,000 worth of damage.

Miraculously nobody was injured.

But the man later returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.092.

The 19-year-old was charged with drink-driving, driving whilst suspended, using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and not displaying P-plates, and will face the ACT Magistrates Court in February next year.

A day earlier at about 9.40am on Friday December 14, a 24-year-old man was caught doing 68km per hour in a 40km per hour zone on Barry Drive in Turner.

Police testing showed the man had a blood alcohol reading of 0.104.

Acting Superintendent Rod Anderson said police would be out in force in the lead up to Christmas, with a focus on weeding out drink drivers on Canberra’s roads.

“As there are a lot of Christmas parties planned and people out celebrating this time of year,” he said.

“We are reminding motorists not just about planning how to get home after the party, but to think before driving the morning after drinking.”
