The Easter road safety blitz got off to a busy start for police after they caught four drink drivers in just seven hours in Canberra's outer northern suburbs, including a 21-year-old P-plater.

The woman from Franklin was pulled over on Flemington Road in Mitchell about 11.50pm on Wednesday after police noticed a silver Mazda being driven erratically.

The provisional driver - who is restricted to a zero blood alcohol content - was breathalysed and gave a blood alcohol reading of 0.158, police allege.

It happened less than 2½ hours after police caught two drink drivers on the Barton Highway at Gold Creek.

They included a man who gave a low-range reading and a 29-year-old Crace woman who alleged recorded a blood alcohol reading of .094, police said.

In the fourth incident, a 36-year-old man was pulled over by police on Wanganeen Avenue in Nicholls at about 4am on Thursday morning. The man tested positive for alcohol and later returned a reading of .084, police said in a statement.

All four will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

ACT Policing Acting Officer in charge traffic operations Sergeant Tracey Duck was appalled by the four drink-driving incidents in Canberra's outer northern suburbs on Wednesday and Thursday.

"The community must share our level of concern because it is only by making drink-driving socially unacceptable that we have a chance of preventing tragedies," Sgt Duck said.

"If any or all of these alcohol-affected drivers had been in a collision, then it would have been a tragic and wretched Easter for those involved."

Police on Thursday launched their Easter road safety message, with Sgt Duck saying the efforts of forces in the capital region through Operations Crossroads would reflect those of police across Australia.

"We will do everything in our power to stop dangerous driving," she said. "But its not just up to ACT police, it is the responsibility of every driver. You make the choice to return home safely."

Operation Crossroads coincides with double demerit for speeding and seatbelt offences up until midnight on Monday April 6. During this time an extra point will be apply for all other traffic offences.

Over the Easter period in 2014, 35 drivers were charged with either drug or alcohol offences, while 258 drivers received traffic infringement notices and 160 were issued with a caution through Operation Crossroads.

Acting Officer Duck said police would be targeting the "fatal five" behaviours through high-visibility patrols, random breath testing and roadside drug testing as well as laser detection to catch speeding drivers.

"There is no leniency," she said. "Police will target drivers who chose to drive over the speed limit, drunk, drug impaired, distracted, fatigued or without a seatbelt - an we will catch them," she said.

She said it was vital to reiterate road safety messages every festive season to minimise harm across the community.

"Its the new younger drivers on the road that we have to reach out to and teach them to be responsible behind the wheel," she said.
