In just a matter of days, a Canberra woman has taken delivery of a $170,000 Mercedes-Benz she won in a national competition and a Canberra teenager has secured the only tickets in Australia to attend the world premiere of One Direction's 3D movie This Is Us next week in London.
It's a remarkable run of luck for a territory that boasts only 1.6 per cent of the Australian population but obviously punches above its weight in the competition stakes.
Canberra is winning.
Public servant Rochelle Mayberry, 26, won the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupe in a Pure Blonde beer competition which offered more than $1 million worth of prizes, from beer coolers right up to the prestige vehicle.
The promotion asked entrants beforehand whether they would keep or pass on their prize to someone else such as a mate. Rochelle thought she might be lucky to win a cooler. She ended up with the Merc - and luckily had selected to keep the prize.
She had a Pure Blonde beer on her birthday in July at Lanyon Vikings where she entered the competition.
''I couldn't believe it,'' she said when she was told she had won the car. ''I asked if it was legit, if it was a scam. It's just so exciting - I feel like a millionaire.''
It's a nice turn of events for the young mother after she endured a recent death in her partner's family, her partner's job loss (he has since secured a new one) and an accident in which her brand-new Mitsubishi Triton was written off. She received her not-too-shabby replacement on Thursday.
Fifteen-year-old Sofia Chieppe won the two tickets to the world premiere of the One Direction film in Leicester Square, London, next Tuesday night (British time) through a Hoyts Cinema promotion.
Entrants had to buy a ticket for the Australian release of the film on September 19 and enter a code.
They were the only two tickets in Australia for the world premiere, with the winner picked at random.
Sofia, a year 9 student at Alfred Deakin High School, was told she was the winner on Monday night.
''I was really happy. I was like, 'Oh my god this is not really true'. It took me two days to realise it was true.''
She will be walking the red carpet at the star-studded premiere, putting her among the first in the world to see the film, with girls around the world anxiously awaiting the release of the film about the boy band.
As she is under 18, Sofia will be taking along her mother, Mary Res, who is also excited.
''I do actually like some of the music,'' she said.
It's understood the members of the band will be presenting the film so Sofia will be in the same room as her musical idols, including her favourite, Harry Styles.
''They're just perfect,'' she said. ''I love their voice, they're singers, and also they're cute, of course.''
She and her mother are also attending a One Direction concert in Sydney in October.
''I'll be taking earplugs because I won't be hearing any of the music,'' Ms Res laughed, alluding to the guaranteed screaming of girls.
In a nice bit of synchronicity, Sofia and her mother arrived in Australia from their previous home in Italy on August 18 last year and are flying out to London on Sunday - August 18.
