Police said the 60-year-old man was dropping his granddaughter off at school in Nicholls at about 8.50am on Monday when they received reports of a car being driven erratically.
The man drove his gold Toyota Avalon into a road sign and mounted a curb on his way from Palmerston to the Holy Spirit Primary School in Nicholls.
He then drove into the school carpark, where his car smashed into two parked cars before coming to a halt.
Police carried out a breath test on the man, who returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.197.
He was taken to Canberra Hospital for a blood test. His granddaughter did not require medical treatment.
He has been summonsed to face ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.
Police are also asking any witnesses to the incident who have not yet spoken to police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
