NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived at the scene 20 kilometres east of Yass about 11am to find police performing CPR on a male truck driver, who was understood to still be trapped in his truck from the torso down. NSW Police later confirmed that the 48-year-old man from Glenmore Park in Sydney's western suburbs died at the scene.

The second truck driver did not suffer any serious injuries.

Goulburn police duty officer Acting Inspector Tracey Pollard urged all motorists to drive safely.

"At about 10.45am this morning, two heavy vehicles were travelling in an easterly direction on the Hume Highway, when about 15 kilometres north of the township of Yass, the rear heavy vehicle has collided with the slower-moving front heavy vehicle," she said at the scene. The victim had been driving in a prime mover when he drove into the back of the slower-moving semi-trailer.

The Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter was also called to the scene, but the mission was cancelled before they could arrive.

Police said the cause of the crash would be subject to an investigation, and a report would be prepared for the coroner.

The accident led the Hume Highway's northbound lanes to be closed, with traffic diverted through Canberra via the Barton and Federal highways until they reopened at 4.38pm. The crash came less than two hours after a serious crash left a woman trapped and a child injured on the Hume Highway off-ramp of the Barton Highway at Yass.

A four-wheel drive rolled and left the driver trapped in the car. She was freed and treated at the scene before she was taken to Canberra Hospital in a stable condition.

NSW Ambulance said a child was also taken to hospital with breathing difficulties.

A NSW Police spokesman said it was a single vehicle accident.

The road was temporarily closed while emergency services cleared the scene.

The Hume Highway was also closed on Sunday night due to a large grass fire, which has since been contained.
