"Stay alert by limiting in-vehicle distractions and keeping a focus on the road and other vehicles as well as the road environment."

Sergeant Anderson said there were 18 collisions and one death on the Kings Highway, which is the main thoroughfare from Canberra to the coast, last summer.

He said one road fatality was one too many.

"While police will do our part to catch dangerous drivers with high visibility patrols, road safety is everyone's responsibility."

Police have increased patrols on roads across the ACT and NSW this holiday season. Double demerit points are in place until January 3.
