Or perhaps imagine how many pizzas have been consumed, die rolled and hours spent huddled around painstakingly-painted miniature figurines, spinning tales of victory and debauchery.
This year, roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons celebrates its 40th anniversary, sparking celebrations among its still committed players and nostalgia from those who have left roleplaying in their past.
The Australian National University Roleplaying Society is one of many groups that is marking the milestone for the classic fantasy game, that for some still captures the imagination in a way computer-based games may not.
ANURPS social officer David Adams said the game allowed players to escape reality and explore the personality and world of someone completely different.
''We’re accountants, students, lawyers, doctors ... but sometimes we want to know what it’s like to be a fire-breathing dragon, or a heroic knight, or a dastardly rogue.''
The classic roleplaying game has gone through many incarnations since its conception in 1974, each met with an amount of anticipation and fear of change.
It seems the fifth edition, released this week, is a bid to revive the game that was once dominant but now has many rivals.
There are mixed opinions of the release following the poorly-received fourth edition, but Adams said those who had experienced the ''profound and positive impact'' Dungeons & Dragons could have would give it a chance.
''D&D provides a safe, vibrant place where players can explore these kinds of things, all within a framework that is logically consistent and understandable,'' Adams said.
This grandfather of roleplaying games has undeniably shaped the lives of many a gamer, taking up a substantial amount of time in the process. A typical game can last one session – about four to six hours – whereas a campaign might last years.
