An ACT Policing spokesman said the 'cowardly assault' occurred during an aggravated burglary in Wanniassa at around 1.20am on Monday, March 20.
Officers were called the Embling Street home after a man allegedly forced his way in and assaulted the resident while demanding money.
The male offender was described as slim, between 35 and 45 years of age, around 180cm tall. Police say the man was wearing dark coloured clothing.
Detective Station Sergeant Reynolds from ACT Policing said the assault on an elderly person was a cowardly act committed against a vulnerable member of the community in their own home.
"The 83-year-old victim was taken to hospital to receive medical treatment," he said.
"This type of incident is unacceptable to the community and police."
"We are requesting information from the community to assist us in apprehending the person responsible for this cowardly assault."
Police urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via https://act.crimestoppers.com.au and quote reference number 6084071. Information can be provided anonymously.
