Electricians sprayed with PCBs

February 2, 2012

Two men have been sprayed with oil containing PCB chemicals and about 60 people have been evacuated from a Civic office building after a light fitting ruptured this morning.

An ACT Fire & Rescue spokesman said firefighters were conducting clean-up activities of a small spill from a ballast of a light fitting at the Canberra House building on Markus Clarke Street.

Roughly 60 staff have been evacuated from the eighth floor as a precaution. The workers were originally told they would be allowed to re-enter within an hour, but ACT Fire and Rescue have since closed off the eighth floor for the rest of the day. The building's other floors are unaffected.

Firefighters were preparing to leave the site about 2.30pm.

"ACT Ambulance Service intensive care paramedics have treated two male patients, aged in their 30s, for possible chemical exposure and taken to the Canberra Hospital in a stable condition for further assessment," the spokesman said.

The light ruptured during maintenance work, but firefighters say there is no sign of a fire.
