Corey Power, 33, was brutally bashed and left for dead on a quiet street in the NSW town of Young in August.
The suspect, Owen Fuller, 18, faced Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday over three unrelated robbery charges.
The matter was adjourned and Fuller will reappear in December. No pleas have been entered.
Cootamundra police crime manager Detective Inspector Paul Huxtable said extradition papers to return Fuller to NSW could not proceed until the Queensland charges were finalised.
The murder charges will be laid once extradition proceedings are complete.
Fuller is also expected to be charged over an armed hold-up at a Caltex service station in Young in late August.
Mr Power had moved back to the NSW town less than a week before his August death to be closer to his four-year-old daughter. He was found unconscious and severely beaten in a Young street by an early morning walker.
Mr Power was taken to Young District Hospital for treatment for severe head injuries, but died a short time later.
Strike Force Bumble was established with detectives undertaking a number of lines of inquiry including combing a local creek for a potential weapon.
