The rush of calls for help between 5.30pm and 7pm on Tuesday followed the storm hitting the city, with most calls to the ACT State Emergency Services in the northern suburbs, centred around Belconnen.

The bureau recorded winds of 50km/h, with gusts of up to 96km/h at Canberra airport about 5.45pm. The wind also meant the apparent temperature of minus 3 degrees at that time.

The SES reported seven teams were out responding to the calls during the afternoon, supported by ACT Fire and Rescue staff.

By Wednesday morning the ACT SES had received 131 requests for assistance, with the phone still ringing. Volunteer units were still responding to 40 outstanding jobs, mostly fallen trees.

The weather is expected to clear up on Wednesday, which the Bureau of Meteorology predicts will be partly cloudy, with just a 10 per cent chance of rain. It's expected to reach a maximum of 15 degrees.

Thursday and Friday are also expected to be dry, with temperatures reaching the low 20s, although there is a chance of rain returning on the weekend and early next week.

Earlier on Tuesday, traffic was blocked on all three city-bound lanes on Northbourne Avenue during the storm, after a large tree fell across the road at the Macarthur Avenue intersection about 4pm.

It followed a severe weather warning issued across the ACT and surrounding region, originally stretching from Newcastle in the north, through Sydney and Canberra and south to Thredbo early in the day.

The Bureau of Meteorology updated the weather warning mid-afternoon, with the threat reduced for northern areas, but still covering the ACT, Southern and Central Tablelands, Central West Slopes and Plains and Riverina, as well as the Snowy Mountains, where blizzards were expected on Tuesday night.

The wild weather also may have played a role in a four-car collision earlier in the day on Commonwealth Avenue just north of the bridge in Civic, which saw two lanes of north-bound traffic closed causing delays for motorists.
