The Great Corin Forest Easter egg hunt was a recipe for a wonderful start to the long weekend but, with large numbers flocking to the picnic ground, there was plenty of competition for the scattered chocolate eggs.

Two year old Kobe Ayers was ready to explore, sporting his trainers, bunny ears and a cottontail.

The Greenway toddler was able to find one egg during the hunt, which he polished off quickly before sitting down to an outdoor lunch.

But some families were not happy about the level of coordination at the free event, saying organisers failed to communicate or supply enough eggs to go around.

Keith Fincham and his two children were part of a group of six that travelled from Lake George and, after almost an hour in the car, tears were flowing with no child able to find an egg.

"There was no ready, set, go," he said. "The hunt was over before it began. The kids at the front collected eggs but then there were none left."

Mr Fincham said the group registered the number of children they were bringing on the Facebook event but felt more communication and coordination would go a long way to avoid disappointment.

He suggested having a roped off area for children under five so they would have a fair chance.

"It was a bit of a fizzer," he said. "It is a beautiful spot but the day wasn't organised as well as we would like. The only eggs we found were given to us by other kids."

Young cousins Grace Richardson and Amarni Saylor, 5, were delighted when a generous boy they hadn't met before gave them an egg as he raced down the stairs from the Alpine Slide.

Hundreds of cars lined the narrow entry road into the area and families stayed long after the hunt to enjoy the weather, kick footballs and explore the picturesque mountain.

The Great Corin Forest Easter Egg Hunt will be held every day over the long weekend at 11am until Monday.
