There will be an oasis of elegance and opulence this year in what can sometimes be a throng of tandoori tans, too-short skirts and wacky suits on Melbourne Cup day at Thoroughbred Park in Canberra.

The racing club has gone all out by investing in some seriously luxurious marquees for Tuesday's big race day.
The marquees under tree-lined Catbird Lane have all been themed - one is a luxury salon featuring gilt-edged mirrors and chandeliers; another goes for an industrial warehouse kind of feel. Others will be dressed in Moroccan flavours or as a garden party setting, to name a few. Thoroughbred Park spokeswoman Briony Young said the sponsors and home-straight marquees had also been turned up a notch. The strategy has already paid dividends as marquee bookings are up 60 per cent on last year.
''We wanted to show people that the marquees were not just four white walls and a picket fence,'' she said. ''We want to show what we can offer as a race-day experience.''
There will be a seven-race program at Thoroughbred Park on the day, with the first race just after 12.30pm.
But the focus, as always, will be on the fashions.
This year's Myer Face of Canberra Racing Kate Goodwin will be helping to judge the fashions on the field at Thoroughbred Park.
There will be prizes for the best-dressed woman, man and couple.
Miss Goodwin, a 19-year-old public servant from Carwoola, said her advice was to go for a classic, polished look, and the little details would make all the difference.
''It's getting really tough because you need to be quite unique, but sometimes people go a little too much over the top,'' she said.
''I think the starting point is classic racewear, but on trend. There's a lot of colour this year but fluoro is out. The hair and makeup has to be well done. It was to be the complete package.''
And ladies, just a reminder, that the fashions on the field rules advise that ''a predominance of exposed skin is not classed as classic racewear''.
Gates open at Thoroughbred Park on Tuesday at 9.30am. Tickets are $25 for adults, $5 for pensioners and $15 for children aged 12 to 17.
