Morgan Hubbard, whose label U.L.E. is based on the values of sustainability and longevity, said she would consider using kangaroo fur in her collections if the pelts were sourced from humane, controlled kills such as the ACT Government's proposed killing of more than 1400 kangaroos.

"I think it would be a good idea to utilise some of the pelts, if we could get them tanned appropriately though, because at least we know that through these monitored, controlled culls we know where they are coming from and they have been killed in a humane way," Ms Hubbard said.

"I'm a vegan and grew up on a rural property outside of Canberra and know how horrible it is to see these poor animals distressed and starving after a big wet followed by long dry spells.

"We need to move away from thinking that only hippies care about the environment and showing that fashion can have a conscience."

The 22-year-old Canberra Institute of Technology fashion student is passionate about sustainable and eco-friendly practices which are commercially viable.

She produces collections via zero waste patterns and using long-lasting and environmentally friendly fabrics such as bamboo, hemp and organic cotton. She also hand-dyes garments using vegetable and plant products, like purple carrots and eucalyptus leaves, which she sources from local primary producers.

Ms Hubbard aims to encourage people to reconnect with the art of dressing through eco-friendly means. One way to do that is by allowing local designers to use kangaroo fur products sourced from scientifically approved culls rather than relying on synthetic faux fur "fast fashion" items purchased online and shipped in from overseas.

"We've lost contact with the value of a garment, if something has sentimental value people hold onto it for longer meaning less land fill and waste," she said.

Unlike New Zealand's possum fur trade, there are no plans to create a similar venture using the popular pelts of eastern grey kangaroos from the culls which take place every year in and around Canberra.

According to Territory and Municipal Services only 20 per cent of the meat from the 2013 kill, which begins on Friday, will be processed and used for baiting and fox control systems.

"The remaining kangaroo bodies will be buried. As with Tasmania, Victoria and the Northern Territory, there are no commercial kangaroo harvesting arrangements in the ACT.

"Given the relatively low number of kangaroos being culled, and the high costs of establishing, administering and monitoring a commercial operation, it would not be cost-effective for the ACT Government to enter the commercial industry," the spokesperson told Fairfax Media
