While officially launching the autumn racing season on Thursday, Thoroughbred Park chief executive Peter Stubbs presented the Pegasus Riding for the Disabled organisation with a $3000 cheque.
He said the 2013 Black Opal Stakes, and its major sponsor Kamberra Wine Company, would be committed to the charity, which helps children and people with disabilities ride horses as a form of therapy, by helping to raise $50,000 or more on race day.
Mr Stubbs also announced a record amount of prizemoney, on and off the track, would be on offer for the 40th anniversary of the Black Opal Stakes.
The annual race meet will wrap up a busy weekend of sport in the capital with an NAB Cup AFL match and Brumbies home game taking place before "all roads lead to Thoroughbred Park on Sunday, March 10," Mr Stubbs said.
While racing aficionados compete for more than $760,000 in prizemoney, including the $250,000 1200m Kamberra Wine Company Black Opal Stakes, fashion lovers will have the opportunity to take home more than $20,000 in cash and prizes.
Fashion expert Sarah Kelly said she was expecting the competition for the 2013 Myer Face of Canberra Racing and the Black Opal Stakes Fashions on the Field to be fierce.
Felt hats, emerald green, prints and chunky jewellery are some of the trends she is expecting to see during the season which kicks off for the fashion set on February 13 at Siren Bar in Gungahlin where the first Face of Canberra Racing heat will take place.
