The Canberran pushing to name the electorates after the Planeteers from the animated television program Captain Planet has revised his suggestion with equally tongue-in-cheek ideas, and another has expressed disappointment that no electorate has been named after "our second chief minister Trevor".

More seriously, objector Arno Mikli says the central electorate should not be named Kurrajong, which is the name of a NSW town.

The Electoral Commission chose Kurrajong as the name was used by early settlers for Capital Hill and because of the presence of the kurrajong tree. It is also the name of the point at the northern end of Weston Park.

However, Mr Mikli said the justification was weak and the connections to Kurrajong Point and the trees were not well known.

Naming an electorate after trees was unprecedented, he said, suggesting Yarralumla instead, as a local Aboriginal word with strong geographic connections to the area.

The Electoral Commission received just nine responses to its second round of consultation on boundaries for the five electorates. These electorates will elect five members each, for a total of 25 parliamentarians at the 2016 election.

The commission will meet on May 5 to decide whether to finalise the boundaries or propose a new set. However, given that none of the responses have raised major concerns and the major parties are happy, substantial changes look unlikely.

The commission might opt to hold a public hearing before making a final decision.

The new boundaries align largely with the main districts in Canberra, based on Belconnen, Gungahlin, Tuggeranong, Woden/Weston Creek and the inner south/inner north.

However, some suburbs have been split to keep each electorate broadly the same size. Five Belconnen suburbs have been shifted into the Gungahlin electorate, and in the south, Kambah has been split from Tuggeranong to be part of the Woden/Weston Creek electorate.

Objector Chris Erett said the law should be changed to allow electorates of different sizes so districts didn't have to be split.

However, Tim Walshaw raised an opposite objection, pointing out the new Gungahlin electorate (to be called Yerrabi) had a projected population of 3000 fewer people than the central electorate (Kurrajong).

He said Downer (population 2654) should be moved to the Gungahlin electorate to even up the numbers.

Submitter Matthew Watts said Hall should remain with the Belconnen electorate, where it had a community of interest, rather than Gungahlin.

One objector complained about the increase from 17 to 25 members and about the change to five-member electorates, saying a fairer system was three electorates of seven members, giving smaller parties a better chance of being elected.

"We need to get away from the ACT [Legislative Assembly] being dominated by two parties and fill it with some more independents," objector David Roberts said. "Go back and do the redistribution again to three times seven seats and give independents a chance of holding the balance of power."

The number of politicians was decided by the Legislative Assembly.

Joel Dignam, who suggested the Planeteer names, has modified his proposal to accommodate the commission's names.

He has suggested MurrumbidgGi for the Weston Creek electorate, combining Murrumbidgee and Gi, a Planeteer associated with water.

He has rejected Brindabella for the southern electorate, as an anagram of "bland liar be".

And he has suggested "Ma-Ti Wheeler" for the Gungahlin electorate, which the commission wants to name Yerrabi.

"Yerrabi, which means both 'go' and 'walk', seems somewhat inappropriate, at least until such a time as developments in the field of light rail improve the situation," he said, with Ma-Ti evoking "heart" and Wheeler "fire", as well as painter Charles Wheeler and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
